Orthopaedic Surgery

Drs. MacDonald and Manson both perform orthopaedic surgeries. We offer several different orthopaedic surgeries including Tightrope™ and Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) repair for cranial cruciate ligament injury, as well as select fracture repairs, Femoral Head and Neck Ostectomy (FHO), amputation, and more.

Each patient is evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine what type of orthopaedic surgery is the best option. Our veterinarians have to consider many different factors including but not limited to the nature of the orthopaedic problem, the general medical health of the pet, and the size of the animal. We discuss the options with the client in order to develop an individualized plan.

TPLO Surgery

The Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy changes the biomechanics of the canine stifle by reducing the Tibial Plateau Angle (TPA). By changing the TPA, when a dog bears weight the forces acting on the joint are neutralized. This technique eliminates the need for the CCL. TPLO is the recommended surgery for medium and larger-sized dogs.

Tightrope™ Surgery

Tightrope™ surgery is an extracapsular method of repairing a torn CCL ligament using a special suture material. This is the option most often recommended for smaller-sized dogs.
